A Whole System Approach to Health
Chinese medicine offers a different way of understanding the body—one that recognizes that our systems do not function independently of one another. Digestion, sleep, stress, circulation, pain, energy, hormones, and emotional well-being can all influence one another, which is why treatment looks beyond a single symptom to understand the larger picture of your health.
Chinese medicine recognizes that the body is constantly working to maintain balance and healthy function. When that balance is disrupted—whether through illness, injury, stress, lifestyle, environment, or other influences—symptoms can begin to appear. Treatment works to identify the patterns behind those disruptions, understand how they may be affecting the body as a whole, and help guide the body toward a healthier, more balanced state.
Finding the Point of Origin
When symptoms develop, Chinese medicine looks beyond what is happening to ask a deeper question: Why is this happening?
Symptoms are the manifestations of something occurring beneath the surface. Pain, fatigue, digestive changes, disrupted sleep, menstrual irregularities, headaches, and other concerns tell us that something has shifted, but they do not always tell us where the problem began or what is driving it. Focusing only on the manifestation can overlook the underlying dysfunction that allowed the symptom to develop in the first place.
Chinese medicine works backward from what the body is expressing to understand the root of the problem—the patterns, disruptions, and contributing factors that may be producing the symptoms we see and feel. The goal is to identify not only what has changed, but where healthy function first began to break down and why.
This is the philosophy behind Origin Point. Beneath the symptoms is a point of origin—the place where imbalance or dysfunction began and from which other changes may have developed. By working to understand and address that origin, treatment can move beyond simply quieting symptoms and toward addressing what is driving them at the source—helping guide the body back toward its own origin point, a state of health where balance and healthy function can be restored.
Putting the Pieces Together
Finding the point of origin requires looking beyond the symptom itself and understanding the context in which it developed. Chinese medicine uses a comprehensive intake to build a detailed picture of a patient’s health history, current function, and the factors that may have contributed to changes over time.
The evaluation explores current and past health concerns, symptom history and progression, sleep, digestion, energy, stress, pain, menstrual and reproductive health, emotional well-being, diet, movement, daily habits, environment, medical history, medications, lifestyle, and more. Particular attention is given to when changes began, what was happening at the time, what influences symptoms now, and how the health picture has evolved, helping uncover connections that may point toward the source of dysfunction.
Chinese medicine also incorporates traditional diagnostic methods such as tongue and pulse examination. Characteristics of the tongue and qualities of the pulse provide additional information that is considered alongside symptoms, health history, and other clinical findings to help develop a more complete picture of the individual.
Together, these findings help identify patterns of imbalance and dysfunction, allowing treatment to be tailored to the unique presentation rather than based on a diagnosis alone.
Our Approach to Care
Once the direction for treatment has been established, care moves forward with a clear, individualized plan based on the patient’s needs, goals, and expected course of treatment. Rather than approaching each appointment as an isolated visit, treatment is designed to build from one session to the next, with each stage of care serving a purpose.
As treatment progresses, changes in symptoms and function are regularly assessed to determine how the body is responding. Treatment frequency, therapeutic focus, and recommendations can then evolve alongside that progress, allowing care to shift as the patient’s needs change.
The goal is for patients to understand where they are in their care, what we are working toward, and what comes next. While every treatment plan is different, care at Origin Point generally progresses through four phases:
A Clear Path Forward
Understand
A comprehensive evaluation to understand current concerns, health history, contributing factors, and the patterns shaping the overall health picture.
Restore
Individualized treatment focused on addressing symptoms and underlying patterns while guiding the body toward healthier balance and function.
Reinforce
As progress occurs, treatment evolves to reinforce changes, strengthen healthy function, and help make improvements more sustainable.
Maintain
Care may become less frequent and focus on maintaining progress, supporting long-term health and resilience, and addressing new concerns as they arise.
